What is Altitude Coffee?
We are the internet's first entirely user-driven coffee roaster. Site visitors are given control over what beans are sourced, what blends are offered, and how those blends are constructed.
How does Altitude Coffee work?
We utilize a patent pending tool named “Ascension” that accepts all kinds of input from users. For single origins, Ascension gathers the raw coffee characteristics from users such as the body, brightness, and sweetness, as well as two primary flavors, such as chocolate or hazelnut. These raw data allow site participants to construct and modify blends based on universal coffee attributes, connecting people with the coffee at a basic level without having intimate knowledge of the origin countries.
Our ranking system gives the more active users additional control by increasing their opinions' weight relative to experience. The more a user rates single origins or adjusts blend compositions, the higher rank they become. Users of higher ranks will also be invited to virtual cuppings which will decide which beans to source next.
Why do it all to begin with?
Specialty coffee roasters have been enriching our lives with the world's coffee for many years now. They employ superstar globe trotting experts who discover coffees and create blends from inside a black box that no one is permitted to see aside from a lucky few. The move online provided roasters with just another way to sell their product. At Altitude Coffee, we believe the internet provides an exciting medium that specialty coffee has yet to explore. By not just opening the black box, but inviting every user inside it, we are bringing the social web to specialty coffee.
Who runs Altitude Coffee?
The users of course! And we're not joking. All the fun happens with the users of the site. The selection of green beans, blend construction, and roast levels are all dictated by site users. There is however a small team of coffee fanatics in Atlanta, GA and Valencia, CA that do the rest.
Where is Altitude Coffee located?
We operate a small batch roaster in Atlanta, GA, and our friends at Newhall Coffee in Valencia, CA help us with the big orders. While we don't have a physical storefront (that's what the website's for silly), we are open to the idea in the future.
Where does the coffee come from?
Altitude Coffee uses Atlas Coffee Importers as its provider of green coffee. Atlas is located in Seattle, WA and has a rich history of providing the specialty coffee industry with the best coffees in the world, including fair trade and organic, sourced from individual farmers.
